Quem é Geraldine?

Geraldine é personagem do poema inacabado “Christabel” - do inglês Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1772-1834). 

'Tis the middle of night by the castle clock
And the owls have awakened the crowing cock;
Tu-whit!- Tu-whoo!
And hark, again! the crowing cock,
How drowsily it crew.
Sir Leoline, the Baron rich,
Hath a toothless mastiff, which
From her kennel beneath the rock
Maketh answer to the clock,
Four for the quarters, and twelve for the hour;
Ever and aye, by shine and shower,
Sixteen short howls, not over loud;
Some say, she sees my lady's shroud. 

Longo e repleto de simbologia, o poema cria um clima de suspense e tensão numa trama de tal forma bem engendrada que o leitor se deixa conduzir desarmado por um caminho misterioso e sombrio que, apesar das diversas interpretações possíveis, sabidamente não vai levá-lo a conclusão alguma.

So halfway from her bed she rose,

And on her elbow did recline

to look at the Lady Geraldine.
